Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
FACE LIFT PROCEDURES
Face lift procedures are designed to turn the clock back ten to fifteen
years. These procedures are performed to achieve natural results, which
allow our patients to appear refreshed, energized, and rejuvenated but
not operated on. Depending on the type of facelift procedure, the
recovery time may vary from one to two weeks. Facelifts are often
performed in conjunction with lifting the forehead and eyelids.
The
Hunstad Centers' MACS Lift procedure is extremely popular. This
procedure only takes ninety minutes and has a typical recovery of one
week or less. There is no incision behind the ear, which is a fantastic
improvement and allows our patients to be completely relaxed knowing
that there will be no visible scar after surgery. A facelift procedure
has typically minimal discomfort.
To improve the appearance of the neck
along with the facelift, a procedure called Platysmaplasty is often
performed. This procedure tightens and eliminates the bands or
‘turkey-gobbler’ appearance of the neck. These bands are divided which
minimizes the chance of recurrence. This neck lifting procedure is
frequently combined with a Full Face Lift, but can give excellent
results in conjunction with the MACS Lift as well. This procedures will
improve and rejuvenate the facial appearance and give one a vibrant,
healthy, and refreshed look.
HOW LONG DOES A FACELIFT LAST
The longevity of a facelift is typically
between seven and nine years. These procedures can be performed on an
outpatient basis or with an overnight stay at the Hunstad Center so that
you can be pampered and cared for that first evening by one of our
highly qualified nurses.
FACE LIFT RECOVERY
There will be some bruising and swelling after a facelift, which
will fade as the face heals. The head will likely be bandaged after the
procedure, and will need to be kept elevated for the first few days of
recovery. Pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication.
Patients should avoid strenuous activities for about two weeks. Scars
will be made as discreet as possible, and can generally be hidden by the
hair or in the natural creases of the ears and face. They also tend to
fade significantly with time.
FACE LIFT
COST
Cost varies per patient and per region of
the country. Typical face lift prices range from $ 7,000 to 25,000.
The cost of the
facelift is determined by many factors. Things that are very
important that should be discussed with your plastic surgeon include
what type of anesthesia provider is caring for you? Is it a board
certified anesthesiologist such as what we have at the Hunstad Center
for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery or is it a nurse anesthetist who normally
in the hospital setting is supervised by the anesthesiologist. Having a
board certified anesthesiologist is the goal standard by which all
others are judged and provides the highest level of safety and care, but
comes with a slightly increased cost as you could imagine.
Another question
asked is, is the facility certified? There are only a few certifying
agencies that can certify the surgical facility. You should be sure
that your procedure is being performed in an accredited facility.
Accreditation Boards include AAAASF, which is the American Association
for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Center, AAAAHC, the
American Association for the Accreditation of Health Care Facilities,
and JACHO, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital
Facilities. All of these organizations are recognized as proper
certifying bodies, and the surgical facility should be certified by one
of these entities.
Another question to
ask is, is the plastic surgeon and the staff advanced cardiac life
support certified? Although this is not required having the physician
and all clinical staff certified in advanced cardiac life support such
as we have at the Hunstad Center for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, ensures
the highest level of supervision, evaluation, and care of all patients
should there ever be an emergency.
One should consider
asking for tour of the surgical facility. Is the surgical facility
properly outfitted? Is there proper cleanliness, proper lighting, and
proper space for the procedure as well as the recovery room and,
overnight facilities, which are commonly necessary following important
facelifting and body contouring procedures? At the Hunstad Center, we
are very proud of our fully certified surgical center and are excited to
have any prospective patient tour our facility and they have all
universally found to be quite impressive and outstanding.
These are important
questions to ask when considering the cost of face lifts. A Face
Lift is an important procedure and needs to be performed
properly in a proper facility with proper personnel. These important
issues will help ensure that you have a successful high-quality outcome.

Other Questions:
1.
Do you tighten the drooping muscles?
Depending on the type
of face lift performed, the muscles are most often
tightened. This tightening is the framework that
enhances the youthful appearance of the face. The
skin is subsequently re-draped over the tightened
muscle.
2.
Will a facelift help the dark circles and bags under
my eyes?
A typical face lift
alone does not help the dark circles and bags under
your eyes. A bletharoplasty (eyelid lift) helps to
rejuvenate the eyes and help with the bags formed
under each patient’ s eyes. This operation is often
done in conjunction with a face lift to complete the
facial rejuvenation.
3.
Why is a revision face lift more difficult than a
first-time facelift?
In experienced
hands secondary face lifts should have the same
risks that a primary face lift does. Secondary
facelifts can be harder if there are abnormal
scarring from the first operation, if there are
abnormalities with the hairline and beardline.
4.
Do I go home after plastic surgery?
Face lift patients
can be kept overnight or discharged that day
depending on surgeon preference.
5.
When can I ” work out”?
Recovery is
typically 1-2 weeks and light workouts can begin at
that time.
6.
How long will bruising and swelling last?
Typically bruising
and swelling last for 1-2 weeks.
